Fungi Recognition & Response

Fungi spark interest for several reasons; culinary enjoyment, ecological value and structural impact. While some value them for food or wildlife support, others study them because they cause trees to fail and fall over! If you manage arboreal assets, your interest is less likely to be environmental or culinary, and far more likely to be legal.

Aim of the course:  It is essential, particularly in this litigious day and age, that anyone who owns or is responsible for trees, whether that be working on them or offering professional advice about them, has sufficient knowledge to be able to recognise fungi and decide on the appropriate action.  This course aims to equip participants with the skills to identify and understand fungi in order to draw sensible conclusions regarding their significance to tree health.

Guide to the day:  During this workshop, we will explore the incredible diversity of fungi, focusing on their varied shapes, sizes, colours, and distinct decay strategies. Throughout the day, you will gain practical guidance on identifying fungal fruiting bodies, understanding how they enter host trees, and mapping their life cycles. We will examine exactly how these organisms behave internally and equip you with the skills to assess their overall significance to tree health and safety.
